Involuntary or rapid eye movement also called as Nystagmus, is characterized by rapid, uncontrollable eye movements. Let’s delve into causes, symptoms, and Rapid eye movement Treatment in Mumbai
Understanding Nystagmus: Rapid Eye Movements
Nystagmus, characterized by rapid, uncontrollable eye movements, can cause your eyes to move in various directions—up and down, side to side, or in a circular motion.
It can either be congenital, present at birth, or acquired later in life.
Distinct Nystagmus Patterns: Types
The movements can exhibit two patterns:
Congenital or Infantile Nystagmus: Typically appearing between 6 weeks and 3 months, this type often stems from parental inheritance. It affects both eyes, causing lateral movement, and leading to blurry vision as the primary symptom.
Acquired Nystagmus: More common in adults, this develops later in life and may result from various conditions affecting the brain, eyes, or ears. It could also be an independent bodily function. Alcohol or drug use can trigger it. Shaky vision is a common complaint among adults with acquired nystagmus.
Spasmus Nutans: An acquired form affecting children typically diagnosed between 6 months and 3 years, it often resolves without treatment between 2 and 8 years of age.
Symptoms include:
Various factors contribute to nystagmus, including developmental issues in the brain or eye, inner ear disorders, strokes, tumors, traumas, alcohol or drug use, and even certain medications. Sometimes, the cause remains unclear, referred to as idiopathic nystagmus.
Diagnosis may involve neurological and ear exams, eye movement recordings, imaging tests like CT scans or MRI, and genetic tests to identify inherited mutations linked to congenital nystagmus.
